TurboTax Users Disgruntled Over Upgrades

H&R Block has decided that the recent price increase by TurboTax can only be described as underhand and sneaky, and as a result, has decided to give away free software to fed up tax filers. Of course, a war between these two tax giants can only be good for customers.

H&R Block has announced that they will provide free deluxe software to anyone who has already bought basic or deluxe versions of TurboTax software. H&R Block has not put this information on their website although the company has made it known through the media.

Apparently, in recent years the TurboTax deluxe edition had certain features which are missing from the most recent edition of the tax filing software, leading to almost 500 negative one star reviews on Amazon. Because accessing the extra features now means upgrading to a more expensive version of the tax software, many customers consider it a poorly disguised price increase. The extra features include the ability to report income from small business and investments, known as schedule C and D forms.

If you would prefer to use the similar deluxe tax software produced by H&R Block, simply email your name, address, phone number, operating system info and proof of purchase for your TurboTax product. The address is SwitchToBlock@hrblock.com.

Bob Meighan is the vice president of TurboTax and he has acknowledged that the company will do everything possible to keep their customers happy in what is a competitive environment. Meighan goes on to say that an upgrade to a deluxe version may well be an option for any customer who feels they have been misled or cheated.

Many users simply get comfortable with a particular brand of tax preparation software, whether it be TurboTax or something else, and often feel it is too costly to switch. Let's face it, shopping around for tax software isn't exactly fun.

If you paid $20 for your basic TurboTax software, you would be getting a $50 value from H&R Block, although most users point out that the overall user experience is more important than the price. This situation allows TurboTax users to get a good look at what their biggest completion is offering, and how easy to use it might be.

If you itemize your deductions, you may be able to include the cost of the tax software you used – something that both H&R Block and TurboTax are fond of telling customers. The average tax refund is somewhere around $3,000.
